Internally air-cooled LightPod technology utilizes compact, high-power electronics, which replaces the traditional design concept of bulky, stationary water-cooled lasers, eliminating the internal water circulating system (the primary reason for the extreme size and weight of traditional lasers) as well as the fiber optic cables and lightguides – which are common repair trouble-points of this previous generation of lasers. Unique 650-microsecond Technology
The breakthrough of 650-microsecond pulse technology enables the production of high and low fluences ranging from 4 j/cm2 to 255 j/cm2 all within this single 650µsec pulse duration. Through clinical trials and research, Aerolase established this as the optimal pulse duration for enabling LightPod lasers to deliver energy deep into the targeted tissue with minimal absorption by epidermal melanin. This avoids thermal overstressing of the skin, eliminating treatment pain and diminishing the risk of any adverse effects commonly caused by the previous generation of long-pulse lasers. As a result, laser procedures can be performed without needing to cool the skin during treatment, even on skin of color. This, in turn, saves the practitioner a lot of cost, time and mess due to the elimination of cooling gels, sprays and anesthetics.
High-Powered 650-Microsecond Technology Overview
The LightPod Neo 1064nm laser’s ability to perform efficaciously without skin cooling is due to its ability to deliver the same range of laser energy density at the skin as traditional longer pulsed (i.e., 3 msec to 30 msec) Nd:YAG 1064 nm lasers, but in a high-powered, yet shorter 650-microsecond pulse duration. Although the melanin in the epidermis is exposed to the same laser fluence as it passes through to the deeper dermis layers, the time of this exposure is 5 to 50 times shorter when using the 650-microsecond pulse duration. This results in a lesser amount of energy absorption in the epidermal melanin. As a result, there is less heat generation within the epidermis, allowing treatment with no skin cooling and with virtually no discomfort. This also results in a higher percentage of laser energy reaching the targets including hair follicles in the deeper dermis, with the same fluence at the skin tissue, as compared to the traditional longer pulsed lasers. Furthermore, because the 650-microsecond pulse duration is shorter than the Thermal Relaxation Time of the skin tissue surrounding the follicle (estimated to be 800 microseconds), the laser-generated heat is effectively sealed within the follicle because it doesn’t have time to conduct outward to the surrounding skin. Therefore the temperature of the follicle and consequent tissue destruction are greater with the 650-microsecond pulse than with traditional (3 msec to 30 msec) pulsed 1064nm lasers.
